Weddings with 15 guests allowed again from April 12 along with funeral wakes

Weddings with 15 guests and funerals with 30 mourners will be allowed again from April 12, it has been confirmed.

In a further easing of lockdown restrictions, the government has announced weddings, outdoor receptions and commemorative events including wakes will now be able to take place with up to 15 attendees.

The limit on attendees at a funeral service will remain at 30.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson made the announcement as he said lockdown restrictions would ease further from April 12 in a press conference at 5pm on Monday.

The relaxation of rules comes after months of frustration for couples who had to reschedule their big day amid coronavirus rules.

An unlucky couple had to cancel their wedding plans seven times in just nine months as Covid rules played havoc on their looming nuptials.

Beth Deeley and Jonty Williamson, who are both 29, are said to have wasted a total of £3,500 on their dud ceremonies.

The first, which was six years in the planning and due to be held last April, was cancelled when the first coronavirus lockdown was first announced in March last year.

Another couple who was forced to cancel their wedding due to Covid restrictions last May had the date permanently tattooed on their arms.

Francis Donald, 26, proposed to Fionnuala Kearney, 24, in December 2017, and the couple started planning their wedding immediately.

They set the date for October 16, 2020, but had never imagined they would have to cancel their big day due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

During a holiday to Turkey in June 2019, they went to a tattoo salon and had the roman numerals of the planned wedding date inked onto their arms.

But then the venue, Hugh McCanns hotel in Newcastle, County Down, told them they would have to postpone their wedding until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Other restrictions to be eased from April 12 include the reopening of non-essential retail and outdoor hospitality, the Prime Minister confirmed today.

Gyms and indoor leisure facilities will also be allowed to reopen from April 12.

From May 17, more restrictions are set to be eased, including reopening cinemas and indoor hospitality.
