Vegan in the Wild

Sometimes it is surprising to find out that some foods are already “accidentally” Vegan.  Below you will find the ones we have discovered.  Often if a food is in question, we will write to the company and find out for sure. If you know of some that we have missed, please comment and we will be glad to research it and add it to the list.

In addition to “accidentally” Vegan information, you will also get the scoop about where to find vegan items, restaurants, and other vegan friendly information.

12 Foods that Seem Vegan, but are NOT

12-Seemingly-Vegan/Vegetarian-Foods-That-Really-Aren’t

This is a page I found recently containing food additives in some of your favorite junk foods that are animal derived.  There were a couple that I was unaware of, but for the most part, we don’t eat any of those foods anyways.  The one that did bother me the most was about Guiness, since that is one of William’s favorite beers.  According to the inquires done at Barnivore.com, only the Guiness Extra Stout is Vegan in North America.

PETA’s Accidentally Vegan List

To get this section started off, this is a link to PETA’s list of items that are “accidentally Vegan”.

This is a very helpful list that separates the foods by what kind you are looking for such as: Breakfast, Snacks, Condiments, Baked Goods, Etc.

Vegan Candy

As it is Halloween, I find myself in a moral dilemma.  I want to give the neighborhood trick or treaters candy, but I don’t want to be a hypocrite.  Luckily PETA has compiled a list of vegan friendly candy and snacks.  If you also suffer this dilemma, or are just curious check out the list here.

Also on the same page you find a list of hidden non-vegan ingredients and what they are

Where can I find this stuff????

It was brought to my attention that a lot of people are not familiar
with where to find some of the ingredients I use.
Hope this helps everyone 🙂

For Wilmington NC and Surrounding Areas:

*Update: Since moving back and living on Carolina Beach, I have discovered that our local Food Lion actually carries a great selection of Veg friendly foods.  We now also have Island Wellness, located at 1140-G N. Lake Park Blvd.  They carry all of the yummy veggie stuff that Food Lion on the island is lacking like Nutritional yeast and Daiya Cheese along with a smoothie and juice bar.

There are many places here to find these ingredients.  Most of your local grocery stores carry Agave, Whole Wheat Flour, and other ingredints. As for specialty ingredients like Daiya Cheese, Veganaise, and Nutritional Yeast, you may have to go to Lovey’s Market, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market, or Tidal Creek Co-Op to find them.

For Lake Charles, LA Residents:

We do all of our shopping at the Kroger near campus (corner of McNeese and Ryan Streets). They have a really good organic produce section which is right next to the refrigerated item section (for soy/almond milk, tofu, tempeh, etc.)  Also, they have a “natural foods” aisle and you can find most stuff on that aisle, like the not-chick’n bullion.
If they don’t have it, the other option is Vita-Mart which is located at 806 East Prien Lake Road.  They offer 30% off everything in the store on Thursdays.  ( I love this place and the women that work there are so friendly and helpful.)

For Eden NC:

This place did not exist when I was growing up and it would have made my vegetarian childhood so much easier.  There is House of Health located at 641 Washington Street.  I visited this store last time I was home and was absolutely blown away.  It is a small store located in what used to be Mitchell’s Drug Store and it is awesome.

For Everywhere Else:

If you are lucky enough to have a Whole Foods you can probably find stuff there.  If not, most towns have an organic grocery, co-op, or something of that sort.
