Dairy and More Lies

Looking for yet another reason to put aside the dairy and go Veg!

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition with the FDA asking the FDA to alter the definition of “milk” to secretly include chemical sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose.

Aspartame has been linked to all sorts of health problems including: leukemia, lymphoma, tumor growth, autism, strokes, vascular disorder and spina bifida. It has also been accused of causing blurred vision, headaches, and seizures.

This isn’t only for milk, either: It’s also for yogurt, cream, sour cream, eggnog, whipping cream and a total of 17 products.

Nascar and Vegans

 Shake and Bake

In honor of the Daytona 500, which just took place, I thought I would share some fun information I have recently learned about Nascar and Vegans.

*Peta honored a number of Nascar tracks with a High Octane Award  for offering vegan fare at their tracks.

The tracks named include:  SMI’s Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway, Kentucky Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Chicagoland Speedway, an International Speedway Corp. track, also has vegan fare.

Among the food choices offered by those tracks are: Going Green Salad With Fried Green Tomatoes; Summer Vegetable and Tofu Flatbread; and Sloppy Jane (made from soy, peppers, onions, molasses and brown sugar barbecue sauce).

Soy and Your Health

Soy and Your Health

A new article that came out on Huffington post helps to clear up some of the common misconceptions about Soy.

Oysters and Vegans

I stumbled upon an article today saying that it is ok for Vegans to eat Oysters.  Not sure I agree, but I really liked a quote that I found in the article:

It’s OK for Vegans to Eat Oysters

“Eating ethically is not a purity pissing contest, and the more vegans or vegetarians pretend that it is, the more their diets start to resemble mere fashion—and thus risk being dismissed as such.”

Here is a link to the whole article. Give it a read and tell me what you think….http://www.slate.com/articles/life/food/2010/04/consider_the_oyster.html

Bill Clinton on Letterman

This is a clip of Bill Clinton on David Letterman talking about his health and why he decided to adopt a plant based diet.

He also mentions how fit plantbased physician Caldwell Esselstyn Jr MD appears. Clinton credits his vegan diet for saving and extending his life. To learn more about Dr. Esselstyn Jr. go here.

12 Foods that Seem Vegan, but are NOT

12-Seemingly-Vegan/Vegetarian-Foods-That-Really-Aren’t

This is a page I found recently containing food additives in some of your favorite junk foods that are animal derived.  There were a couple that I was unaware of, but for the most part, we don’t eat any of those foods anyways.  The one that did bother me the most was about Guiness, since that is one of William’s favorite beers.  According to the inquires done at Barnivore.com, only the Guiness Extra Stout is Vegan in North America.

Free to Breathe – Lung Cancer Awareness 5K

5K Run and Fundraiser: Free to Breathe – Lung Cancer Awareness

LAKE CHARLES, LA – MARCH 26, 2011

MFA All-star

When I was little I lost my father, John, to lung cancer. He was only 39 years old. No more families should have to suffer losses like this. William and I have decided to join some of our friends here in Lake Charles by participating in this 5K event.

Helping those affected by lung cancer is a high priority and we need your support to make a difference. Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of American men and women; it kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, kidney and melanoma cancers COMBINED. The Free to Breathe® event that we are participating in will raise awareness of the disease and funding for vital research.

Please support our efforts by making a donation through our team fundraising page; it is simple, fast and totally secure. And, we also encourage you to join us on event day!

Many thanks for your support! If you know of someone else who would like to donate or participate, please forward them this link!

Please follow this link and click on Melissa or William Coppage to donate.

Anything you can contribute helps!

Thanksgiving’s Toll on Turkeys

Every Thanksgiving millions of Turkeys are slaughtered for the dinner table. This year, instead of killing a turkey serve a compassionate vegetarian meal at your table. In the center you can show a picture of your adopted turkey.
Farm Sanctuary is a safe haven for turkeys. You can sponsor a turkey for $30. If you have the land available you should consider actual turkey adoption. I know once we move to a new home where we have some land I want to adopt a couple of them. They are very intelligent and loving and they like to be around people.  We already sponsored our turkey this year, her name is Velma and her photo will be proudly displayed in the center of our feast.
Here is the link for adoption and sponsoring. http://www.adoptaturkey.org

Have Asthma? Try Eating Soybeans.

My good friend Erica found this article and sent it to me.  Vegan and vegetarian diets have already shown that they are beneficial for helping ease allergies and various other illnesses.  Now they are testing to see if soy can be helpful in treating and relieving asthma.  They pay for participants and the article includes a phone number if anyone suffers from asthma and wants to participate.

Check out the article here.
