Oysters and Vegans

Posted on: June 1st, 2012 by missycoppage 3 Comments

I stumbled upon an article today saying that it is ok for Vegans to eat Oysters.  Not sure I agree, but I really liked a quote that I found in the article:

It’s OK for Vegans to Eat Oysters

“Eating ethically is not a purity pissing contest, and the more vegans or vegetarians pretend that it is, the more their diets start to resemble mere fashion—and thus risk being dismissed as such.”

Here is a link to the whole article. Give it a read and tell me what you think….http://www.slate.com/articles/life/food/2010/04/consider_the_oyster.html

I don’t eat vegan as a way to be more ethical or humbler than thou. I avoid all animal protein in my diet purely for health reasons. Shellfish and oysters are animal protein, and what’s more, many people are allergic to them. I discourage anyone from calling any food containing them as vegan acceptable. That’s like saying “oh it has only a little bit of lead, arsenic, and allergens, so it’s okay.” Many people choose vegan food because they hope they can trust it. Please don’t let us down! It’s difficult as it is to find vegan offerings when so many people use the word interchangeably with vegetarian. I was duped into buying “Veggie Cheese Slices” only to find out too late that casein (milk protein) was an ingredient! And there was no allergen warning!!! There are people who think it funny to spike a vegan dish with some animal protein just as there are people who would tell a Muslim their sausage gravy is made of beef when in fact it is pork. So don’t believe these naysayers who try to shame vegans into eating meat. Misery loves company, and they’re jealous of our great health.

Thanks for your response Kenneth. I agree with you. And for what it is worth, I have no desire to eat Oysters, I have never had one ever and will not start now.

I know of your dilemma with the Veggie Cheese slices as well. My mom was trying to buy stuff for me to eat when I visited home. She bought some of those and was so proud of herself. I had to let her down easy and explain to her how she has to closely read the packages and if there is anything she is unsure of to send me a picture and let me read it first before she buys it.

I am a new Vegan and used to love oysters. I honestly don’t feel like I am missing out on anything BUT oysters. I made the decision to eat a vegan diet based on my fear of animal protein and its relationship to chronic diseases. Is there any information on the relationship of animal proteins found in fish specifically and links to chronic diseases? Also I am curious about toxicity of oysters as well. Thanks!
